Medeama SC, the champions of the Ghana Premier League, have demonstrated remarkable consistency in the championship over the past five years.
On Sunday, Medeama SC secured their first-ever Ghanaian top-flight title by defeating Tamale City FC in the final match of the season at Tarkwa Akoon Park. The Yellow and Mauves emerged victorious to clinch the championship.
To secure their historic league triumph, Medeama achieved a resounding 3-0 victory over the Citizens, with goals from Joshua Agyemang and Jonathan Sowah.
The team based in Tarkwa undoubtedly deserve their victory in the Ghanaian championship, as they came close to winning the title on two previous occasions in recent seasons.
In 2018, Medeama was leading the league standings and positioned as the clear favorites to secure the league title. However, their journey was abruptly interrupted when investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas unveiled an exposé on bribery and corruption, resulting in the suspension of the season.
Following the revelation of widespread misconduct, including the involvement of referees and match commissioners, FIFA and CAF imposed bans on numerous high-ranking officials. Consequently, the league for that season was ultimately canceled.
Furthermore, in the previous two seasons, the Yellow and Mauves secured a third-place finish, while in the most recent season, they concluded as the runners-up.
Prior to the interruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, during the 2019-2020 campaign, Medeama was sitting at the top of the Ghanaian championship table before the season was abruptly canceled.
Although they had a slow start to the 2022-23 season, Medeama SC managed to turn things around and eventually clinch their inaugural Ghana Premier League title. They concluded the season with a total of 60 points from 34 matches, comprising 18 wins, 6 draws, and 10 losses.
