A yutong bus with a high number of passengers traveling from Tarkwa to Accra caught fire and was completely destroyed at Kasoa in the Central region. Fortunately, all the passengers managed to safely exit the bus before it was consumed by flames, but they did lose some of their belongings in the fire.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the Ghana National Fire Service indicate that the fire was caused by a fuel leak.
The bus, registered as GT 5190-17 and operated by Imperial Express, a privately-owned transport company, was carrying more than 49 passengers who were journeying from Tarkwa in the Western region to Accra.
The incident occurred when the bus reached Ngleshie Amanfro in the Ga South municipality of the Greater Accra region.
According to witnesses on the bus, they reported hearing an explosion-like sound coming from the back of the vehicle where the engine was located, followed by the emergence of flames.
When the Kasoa Fire Service received an emergency call, they promptly dispatched their team to the location. Unfortunately, they were unable to salvage much from the fire.
Sources made it known that the driver was aware of a fuel leakage issue but chose not to address it. Despite passengers' pleas for the driver to stop and resolve the problem, especially considering the malfunctioning air conditioning in the bus, the driver proceeded to refuel the vehicle.
